Time and Location of the Fall 2008 Finite Element Circus
The Fall 2008 Finite Element Circus will be held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on
October 24-25 (Friday and Saturday). The Friday session will start from 1:30pm and the Saturday
session will start at 9:00am. All talks will be in Heffner Alumni House (look for 32 on the campus
map, see below).
Registration and Dinner
Please register online if you plan to attend the Finite Element
Circus. You may also need to indicate whether you will attend the Friday dinner and/or whether you
need a campus parking permit (see below for more information on parking). Here is a list of the
registered participants.
On Friday evening, there will be a family style dinner at "Plum Blossom", a Chinese restaurant
close to the campus in Troy. The price is $17 per person. If you plan to attend the dinner, please
indicate so when registering. Please also write a check to "Rensselaer" and send it to Ms. Kronau
before October 17, 2008:
Ms. Michele Kronau
Department of Mathematical Sciences
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
110 8th Street
Troy, NY 12180
The restaurant is located at: 685 Hoosick Rd, Troy, NY 12180. Tel: (518) 272-0036. If you drive
along route 7E (Hoosick Rd) away from Hudson River, after you pass the 15th Street (the major
street across RPI, see campus map), there would be 3 more traffic lights before you spot the
restaurant on your left.
Hotel Information
A block of rooms are held for the nights of October 23-25 at Franklin Square Inn & Suites which
is located in downtown Troy. This hotel is within walking distance to the campus and to the Hudson
River. Please mention "Finite Element Circus" when making reservation to get the special rate of
$109.00+tax. This rate will be kept till October 1, 2008, and parking and wireless internet are included.
Troy is very close to many other towns (Albany, Latham etc), if you have a car, you may also want
to explore other lodging options.
Transportation and Parking
You can get to RPI by plane, by train, or by car. Both the Albany International Airport and the
Albany/Rensselaer Amtrak station are just few miles away from the campus. Taxicabs are available
from both locations. For more information including the driving directions, refer to
this page.
You would need a permit to park on campus on Friday. Please indicate (before October 17, 2008)
whether you need a free parking permit while registering, then you could pick it up (under your
name) from the Public Safety & Parking Access Office (36 on the campus map, besides the pedestrian
bridge on the 15th street). And please find out where to park from the officer. If you don't mind
walking, you might be able to find some nearby street parking. After 5pm on Friday and throughout
Saturday, parking is free in the North Lot restricted area (Green striped spaces) and West Lot,
see this site.
